Every year I look forward to March, the arrival of spring, the promise of warmer weather and most of all the celebrations. Of course, St. Patrick’s Day is the premier party day of the year, but this glorious month offers many more opportunities for revelry. For example, who doesn’t have a wild and sordid story about National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day?
Did you know that March is also International Ideas Month? Well, it is, and I’ve put together a few ideas of how to make it the best month of the year.
March 1 Beer Day. (Iceland)
I’ve never visited Reykjavik, but you’ve got to love a place that devotes an entire day to the golden nectar of the gods. The holiday began in 1989 to celebrate the end of a 75-year ban on beer. What better way to kick off the month than raising your glass to celebrate the end of tyrannical Icelandic prohibition?
March 3 What if Cats and Dogs had Opposable Thumbs Day. What a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate your Darwinian superiority to your furry friends. Take Fido to the park and reinforce the fact that he can’t throw his own ball. Or, show Fluffy that can opener operation is better left to a higher species. Your pets will have a newfound appreciation for you.
March 7 National Be Heard Day. Loosen up the ol’ vocal chords, grab a few folks from the office and head out to a karaoke bar.
March 8 Be Nasty Day. I don’t know if this day is in observance of freedom from personal hygiene or for outwardly aggressive acts of slander. Either way, it is best celebrated alone.
March 9 Panic Day. Everything is going to be fine. Relax, take a deep breath, call a friend and go directly to your nearest watering hole for a little therapy.
March 12 National Workplace Napping Day.
This may be the best holiday of the month. St. Patrick’s Day is only five days away and a nice nap in the office will ensure you are well-rested and prepared for the festivities.
March 17 St. Patrick’s Day. You know what to do with this one.
March 18 Awkward Moments Day. This holiday couldn’t be more perfectly timed. Make sure you take full advantage of St. Patrick’s Day and you will generate ample awkward moments to share with friends and family.
March 19 Act Happy Day. Nothing says “I love you” like faking it. Put on your best face and spend some quality time with those you hate.
March 23 O.K. Day. Every day can’t be the best day of your life. Some days are just O.K. Take an acquaintance to a mediocre restaurant for an average meal and nice conversation about the weather.
March 26 Make Up Your Own Holiday Day.
