One of the main Dallas teachers unions — Alliance/AFT — forwarded a message (partially excerpted here) to union members earlier today; it offers some information about the RIF that will occur tomorrow and how it impacts teachers…
"Four hundred sixty-three (463) teachers, counselors and contract employees will be notified of their RIF at the end of the workday on October 15, 2008, by letters given to them by their principals. Those employees will have three (3) workdays to make decisions on whether to sign the settlement agreement.

"Three hundred and fifty (350) teachers, counselors and contract employees will be notified of their reassignment to new schools at the end of the workday on October 15, 2008, by letters given to them by their principals. Reassigned employees will have Thursday to transition to the new assignments. They will report to the new assignments on October 17.
"Elementary teachers who are affected by numbers 1 or 2 above will not be required to attend Wednesday’s parent conference night.

"A new window for signing the settlement agreement has been established. It is October 15 through October 20. This window will most likely be the last time this opportunity will occur. Any contract employee may sign a settlement agreement during this October 15-20 window. To date, 216 teachers and contract employees have accepted the voluntary resignation settlement agreement.

"There is no new information at this time regarding the Federal Title dollars and its impact on positions paid by those dollars.

"If employees with H-1B visas sign the settlement agreement, those employees will be paid through January 16, 2009. Hence, they will not be required to leave the United States until that time."
