DISD trustees did the right thing Thursday, voting to take $397,000 from the district’s central office budget to pay Teacher Incentive Fund awards to 116 teachers who previously qualified for the awards but didn’t receive them due to errors made by their principals. Regardless of whose fault this mistake was — and since this is DISD, there has been the usual amount of finger-pointing — the board took money from a budget that it and central administrators use to pay the teachers, according to the DMN story. Trustees Carla Ranger and Jerome Garza voted against using district funds to pay the teachers, with Garza saying the board was acting irresponsibly due to the district’s budget shortfall. DISD’s human resources chief said the affected teachers will receive the award money before Christmas.
