Garcia on the move

Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia, who represents City Council District 1, and her husband, Domingo, are in the process of building a home in the Kessler Springs development off of Cedar Hill Avenue. Since this move also puts Garcia into Dallas County Commissioners District 4, this all but confirms the rumors that Dr. Garcia plans to run against current District 4 Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield when she reaches her City Council term limit in May.

Mardi Gras in Oak Cliff

Coming on the heels of the well attended and much heralded Bishop Arts District Election Night Party, Oak Cliff resident Amy Cowan is pulling together a group of volunteers to organize a Mardi Gras celebration for the Bishop Arts District, which will take place in February.
Cowan is planning for a parade from Methodist Hospital to the Bishop Arts District, and will be looking for neighborhood associations, businesses and other area organizations to build floats to be included in the parade. Based on what Cowan pulled off with the Election Night Party, we expect this to become a new Oak Cliff tradition.

Stevie Ray Vaughan comeback

Jason Roberts recently was awarded the 2008 Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce volunteer of the year award, also known as the “I have another meeting tonight and won’t be home for dinner” award. In keeping with his unbelievable amount of neighborhood involvement, Roberts has recently birthed a new idea that he is championing in an effort to raise the awareness of the Cliff.
Legendary blues-rock musician Stevie Ray Vaughan, ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as No. 7 in its list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”, was born at Methodist Hospital and raised right here in the Cliff.
To commemorate the fact that Vaughan has such strong ties to Oak Cliff, Roberts is working to raise the funds necessary to erect a statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan in Lake Cliff Park, in the shadow of the hospital where he was born. And while it is still early in the process, Roberts’ track record of making big ideas a reality makes it seem entirely possible that the statue of Vaughan could become a tourist attraction right here in the Cliff.
