Over the next few months, you may spot Winnetka Heights neighbors Randy Martin and Derwin Hall riding their bicycles around our neighborhood and beyond — as far south as Joe Pool Lake and as far north as Grapevine, in fact. The pair are in training for the upcoming AIDS/Lifecycle, a seven-day 560-mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles on May 31-June 6, which raises funds for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.

"Derwin and I are avid supporters of several local HIV service organizations, especially through our participation in the Lone Star Ride Fighting AIDS, which supports three local agencies," Martin says. "We want to go to California to push the limits, to challenge ourselves physically and mentally, and to join with over 3,000 others from across the country in raising awareness that HIV is still an enormous problem, and in raising funds to address the problem."

Martin and Hall are each trying to raise $3,000 for the ride; to contribute to their efforts, find Hall’s donation page here and Martin’s here. Both men are part of the Wild Stallions team, and their nicknames are Seabiscuit and Ring Master Randy. Wave if you see them chugging along in Kessler Park or up and down Hampton — those hills are some of their most challenging training segments, Martin says.
