The Observer‘s Robert Wilonsky has this lengthy post on Unfair Park today, all about neighborhood resident Edwin Cabaniss’s efforts to revive the Kessler Theatre at Davis and Clinton and make it "a mixed-use facility — ‘mixed-use’ in this case meaning a dance studio, a performance space, an art gallery and so forth."
This theater, which Cabaniss says hasn’t been officially used in 31 years, is one of the "contributing structures" mentioned repeatedly by the Bishop/Davis study committee members, as well as one that architect Stephen Pickard and urban planner Kevin Sloan brought up more than once when I interviewed them for April’s cover story. Cabaniss mentions the parking issues tied to the theater — namely, that there are simply not enough allowed by the city to accomodate a theater venue — which is one of the issues the committee wants to address.
Cabaniss cautions on getting too excited at this point in the process, but mentions that the theater could reopn as early as this fall, and feature live music by New Year’s Eve 2010.
