My column about Hush Puppies apparently hit home

A few of you have called or emailed about this month’s magazine column, in which I waxed somewhat poetic about my days as a young, boring nerd.

Interestingly enough, the most common refrain from readers relates to my reference to wearing Hush Puppies shoes, a definite throwback to a mostly bygone era. A few people laughed at the fact I wore Hush Puppies, a few people had no idea what I was talking about, and one guy called to ask me where they can still be purchased (I don’t know the answer to that one, and it doesn’t appear there’s a dealer in Texas, according to the Hush Puppies website).

So for those of you in the dark about Hush Puppies, here’s a link to what looks like the actual shoes that graced my feet during my formative years. After you take a look at this link, you’ll probably have a good idea why I turned out the way I did.

I’m 32 and I remember seeing Hush Puppies at all kinds of department stores, where I grew up, in the Northwest. Maybe they weren’t as popular here.
