A new Oak Cliff middle school will bear the name of Zan Holmes Jr. The Dallas Independent School District board approved Zan Holmes Jr. Middle School Thursday. Holmes, a Dallas civil rights leader who served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1968 to 1972, is pastor emeritus at the St. Luke Community United Methodist Church. (I don’t have any details on that school. I think the DISD press office must be in meetings or something because they’re not answering the phones this morning.)

Kathlyn Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy, in honor of the former school board trustee, will be the name of the early college academy that DISD is building on 5 acres adjacent to the University of North Texas at Dallas (by the way, that school changed its name from the University of North Texas Dallas campus). Gilliam served as a DISD board member from 1974 to 1997, and was school board president from 1980 to 1981.

The existing early college campus at Mountain View College will be named for Trini Garza, the first Hispanic to serve on the DISD board.
