… to The Promise House, Dallas’ only homeless shelter exclusively for teenagers. What started as a 16-bed emergency shelter in Oak Cliff has grown into 10 programs for at-risk youth, including a group foster home for teen mothers and their children, and 15 apartments where foster kids can transition to living independently. “Teenagers are not the most likeable sometimes, and when you combine that with homelessness, people can be reluctant to show compassion,” says Promise House spokesman Joshua Collier. “But teenagers are often the ones most in need.” It takes about $1.4 million a year in private donations to keep the nonprofit afloat. In recognition of its 25th anniversary, Promise House is asking for $25 donations. Make donations at promisehouse.org.
