El Rio Grande supermarket opened over a year ago near Davis and Hampton, and I stopped in for the first time Saturday to grab breakfast tacos, which were fine. But there’s so much more to talk about here. El Rio Grande is like Walmart meets Disney and takes it out for tacos. The mega store features a tortilleria the size of my apartment, plus a bakery pushing all shapes and sizes of fruit covered cakes and the biggest selection of Mexican pastries I’ve seen this far north.

Much of the prepared food is on display and you can point to what you want or order from the menu, which includes tacos, quesadillas, stews, roasted meats, hamburgers and a dozen other choices. We tried breakfast tacos with egg and potato and egg and ham. They were good and hot, served with two corn tortillas and a spicy red salsa. I went back for lunch this week and tried barbacoa tacos, which were OK too. I don’t know that I would order them again, but I intend to work my way through the menu over the next year or two. I will let you know if I discover anything no one should live without.
