I’m typing this with chilled fingers. The power has been out at my house since 10 p.m. last night, and was out for a couple of hours on Thursday afternoon. The temperature in the house was down in the 40s — and two pairs of socks, two heavy shirts, a scarf and a bulky sweater haven’t helped much.

I expect the electricity to go off again. Oncor, which oversees power line maintenance, says it is doing what it can, but it may be Sunday before power is restored everywhere. But given the record — and completely unexpected snow fall — I don’t know how much it can do. My favorite statistic in all this: That we had as much snow in 24 hours as we do in five normal winters. Five.
