The Boys & Girls Clubs of America recently named Darrius Shaw of Oak Cliff as its Youth of the Year for Texas. Shaw, an 18-year-old senior at the Townview Magnet Center high school, has logged 225 volunteer hours in the past year, including organizing recycling roundups for the city of Dallas.

He is a 12-year member of the Oak Cliff Boys & Girls Club, where he is president of the Young Leaders Keystone Club and a member of the Dallas Elevators and the Collegiate STEPS program.

As part of the award, Shaw gets a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation. He graduates in June and plans to attend New York University to study engineering.
