Historic DISD buildings top the newest list of the city’s most endangered historic resources. Preservation Dallas released its annual list this morning. Adamson High School and the former Oak Cliff Christian Church, which have been at the center of preservation fights recently, were cited as examples.
“While it is clear that may DISD schools … require updating … the solution is NOT to demolish these venerable and beloved schools that are important landmarks to the city and its history,” the Preservation Dallas report states.
Vacant former public libraries also were included in the list. Among them, the former Hampton-Illinois Branch Library. It was designed by architect Harold A. Berry and built in 1964.
South Dallas Historic Districts, such as the Tenth Street neighborhood, Wheatley Place and South Boulevard/Park Row also made the list.
And Preservation Dallas put the city’s historic preservation program on the list. The city’s budget for historic preservation was cut 50 percent last year.
