Bastille Day in Oak Cliff was no joke. Well, maybe it was a little. After all, there were ladies and gents running around in French maid costumes and lots of people wearing black-and-white striped shirts with berets. (Do people really dress like that in France?)
But what I mean is: Go Oak Cliff, the people who put the thing on, were serious about it. Think about what goes into putting on an event like that. Besides all the normal stuff like pulling permits to close the street, hiring security and renting an ATM, they transformed part of the street into a Pétanque court, which required about a ton of crushed granite. And they wrangled about eight well-known chefs to compete in a mussels competition. That’s pretty impressive, and it drew some 1,500 people to the Bishop Arts District on a Wednesday night.
