The possibility of bike lanes coming to Bishop Boulevard was mentioned to me last year by Councilman Delia Jasso, but I hadn’t seen the actual plans until I received this rendering from the City of Dallas. These are not the final plans; project manager Haytham Hassan tells me that the majority of people preferred this option at a recent public meeting. “We are currently modifying it to address some of the property owners’ concerns,” Hassan says.

The lanes would be constructed on Bishop between Colorado and Davis. When Jasso told me about this, she said that it would allow “folks that work at Methodist to ride their bikes to Bishop, eat, and ride their bikes back.” It will hopefully be the first dedicated bike lane in the city, she added, with the design including trees, historical streetlamps and green space. To convert the avenue Jasso explained, “You make the four lanes smaller, bring them toward middle, then on each side there is room to add bicycle path.” So, as you can see from the image (click on it for a slightly larger view), on each side of the middle lane for turning is a lane for cars, then a bike lane, then a lane for parallel parking, then streetscaping (trees and streetlamps), then a wide sidewalk for pedestrians.

Jasso says she hopes to use the idea along other boulevards in her district (Jefferson, perhaps?). “We can take key boulevards, and we don’t need all that space for cars,” she says.
