Fourteen teams signed up for Blues, Bandits and Barbecue, which organizers are calling “the first sustainable-meat barbecue competition in the world.” The deadline to enter was Monday, but if you hurry, they are likely to accept late entries.

The event is more than just a barbecue competition. It’s a showcase for newly rezoned West Davis. The cooks will set up behind the Kessler Theater, and there will be special events going on at most West Davis businesses, such as the CRAVE art show at Nova. And there will be pop-up shops similar to the ones neighbors organized for the Better Block Project that was part of Oak Cliff Art Crawl in April.

Volunteers are needed for retail sales, the registration table, running errands, carpentry, trash and recycling, landscaping and setting up/breaking down the event. There is an online form to sign up for a volunteer slot. It’s a good opportunity to get involved in the haps in Oak Cliff.
