Symmer Cano is a 16-year-old Oak Cliff girl with type-one diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes.

This Saturday, her whole family and a team of about 50 friends and family members are participating in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation walk at the American Airlines Center. It is the third year in a row her family has walked, and last year, they raised $2,500.

Symmer checks her blood four times a day and gives herself insulin shots. Insulin keeps her alive, but there is no cure for diabetes.

That’s one reason hair salon Studio 410 is throwing a fund-raising party in Symmer’s honor. Stylist Miriam Ortega, who co-owns the salon with her husband, is organizing the party at 2414 Sunset. The party is Saturday from 8:30 p.m.-1 a.m. and includes DJ sets, artwork form grafitti crew Sour Grapes, food and drinks. A minimum $5 donation is requested for admission, and all donations go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund.
