The guys who are now operating the Texas Theatre — filmmaker Barak Epstein, film producer Adam Donaghey and composer/filmmaker Jason Reimer — are renovating the theater and expect to have a grand reopening in January. But there is still a lineup of weekly films starting Sept. 30.
Their renovation plans include:
- installing a 35-mm changeover system, which would allow them to screen repertory film prints,
- tweaking the existing digital projection system to meet i-Cinema standards,
- installing an adjustable 40-foot screen so that the theater can be used for movies, plays and other stage performances,
- adding 16-mm and Super 8-mm film projection,
- adding soundproofing between the theater and the lobby,
- constructing a concession stand and bar.
The partners’ goal is to bring traditional and digital films to the theater and fill seats.
“Long-term goals to restore the theater to its original condition still exist, but in order to realize those goals, we’ve got to be on par with competing theaters,” Epstein says. “Attracting audiences is the only way this theater will survive.”

- Tues. Oct. 12 – Harold and Maude by Hal Ashby
- Tues. Oct. 19 – After Hours by Martin Scorsese
- Tues. Oct. 26 – Bonnie and Clyde by Arthur Penn
- Tues. Nov. 2 – Last Days of Disco by Whit Stillman
- Tues. Nov. 9 – Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia by Sam Peckinpah
- Tues. Nov. 16 – Jesus’ Son by Alison Maclean
- Nov. 13-14 —Blood Bath Horror Film Festival
They’re also planning a series of director tributes for Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock and Jaques Tati.
