When we wrote about $5 lunches in Oak Cliff this past summer, we didn’t know about El Tacaso.
It’s a taqueria on Westmoreland between Fort Worth Avenue and Davis, and every time I drive by, they seem pretty busy. That’s always a good sign.
El Tacaso has about nine lunch specials that are $4.99 and come with rice and beans and a drink. The lunch specials include tacos, flautas, enchiladas and caldos.
I was hungry enough to eat my steering wheel, so I ordered beef gorditas. I watched the cook pat the dough and cook my gorditas on the griddle before stuffing them with tasty beef and sauteed onions. She placed two containers of salsa in the to-go order, and I was glad I tasted it before I poured it into my gorditas — it was delicious but way too spicy for my gringo palate.
It was fast, and the food was good. For a $5 lunch, it’s hard to beat.
