It's after 2 a.m. and you have $5 in your pocket. Order this at El Tapatio Rincon and get change back.

The Texas Theatre is my new favorite hangout in Oak Cliff.

It has an eerie history as the place they nabbed Lee Harvey Oswald. And the filmmaker management team who recently took it over screens local indie films and classics such as “Metropolis” and “Seven Samurai”.

The Texas has 1931 Moorish revival architecture, and Howard Hughes was the original owner.

But there’s also a bar.

Aviation Cinemas, the aforementioned filmmaker management team, installed it this year, along with an updated concession stand. And even though we haven’t watched that many movies, the Texas Theatre bar has become a regular stop on chilly bike rides. It’s possible we’ve spent more time there drowning the holiday blues than we spent watching the handpicked flicks the Texas put on between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

At the Texas Theatre bar, bring your own vinyl and put it on the record player while bartenders Del and Brian mix you a drink or pop open a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer ($2).

If that puts you in the mood for Mexican food, try El Rincon Tapatio.

At El Rincon Tapatio, there's this, and also, Galaga.

This is a dive on Jefferson, and we discovered it one night after 2 a.m. The food is OK. El Rincon Tapatio has a huge menu that includes grilled meats served with tortillas, rice and beans; enchiladas; taquitos; tortas; and fajitas. And it’s cheap. Our best find was the hamburger with french fries for $2.70. They also serve breakfast (which we haven’t tried), plus you know, combo plates.

Two things about El Rincon Tapatio are important to mention: They have a Ms. Pacman/Galaga arcade game. And they are open Sunday-Tuesday, 7 a.m. to midnight, and ’til 4 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
