DART spent $20 million and over two years renovating the 97-year-old building near Corinth Street Station. Monroe Shops opens Tuesday as the new DART police headquarters.

Monroe Shops was a train maintenance facility for the Texas Interurban Railway, starting in 1914. The Interurban stopped running in 1948.

Since then, the Monroe Shops has housed Fleming & Son Papermill and a U-Haul place. The city of Dallas owned the abandoned building before DART acquired it in April 1991 as part of the land acquisition for the Blue Line.

The 69,000-square-foot building is on the National Register of Historic Places. And DART is applying for LEED certification on the renovated building.
