Oak Cliff-based photojournalist Debi Lang in 2003 started Caring for the World Films, a documentary production company that makes movies that tell the stories of nonprofit, international humanitarian organizations.
Not only do Lang and her crew make movies, they also roll up their sleeves and get to work for the nonprofits they’re filming. Caring for the World Films is a nonprofit too. They raise money for their production and travel expenses, and there is no cost to the often underfunded organizations they’re highlighting.
Their mission is to spotlight nonprofits that don’t get much publicity. A lot of people want to help in Haiti and Darfur, Lang says.
“There are thousands of these hardworking, nonprofit organizations all over the planet,” she says. “People just haven’t heard of them.”
So far, the company has produced a three-part documentary about Cape CARES, an organization that provides medical care and health education in rural Honduras.
This week, Lang and her crew head to Nepal to work with Himalayan Health Care, which has helped the poor of Nepal since 1992.
