There is something very Laura Ingalls Wilder-y (read: wonderful) about this short essay DMN gardening editor Mariana Greene wrote about knock-out roses versus antique roses.

Call me old-fashioned, but my antique roses are the reason I live for spring. I bury my face in petal-heavy cabbage roses and sniff at the tiny sweethearts clothing the side of my old house. I want to imprint my olfactory memory permanently with the perfume of old roses to sustain me when I no longer have a garden.

Today is Good Friday and Earth Day. Don’t miss those Oak Cliff roses. Gather ye rosebuds and whatnot.
