We all know by now that Oak Cliff is bike friendly. Cyclists receive discounts at neighborhood shops and restaurants, and our neighborhood’s new councilman is a cyclist — not to mention it’s what the kids are doing these days.

If you [heart] bicycles, don’t miss these neighborhood shout-outs to cycling:

We love freelisa designs, and we especially love this cycling T-shirt for women sold at IndieGenius. Cute! If you’re a man, you can purchase a shirt with the Bike Friendly Oak Cliff logo (also made by freelisa) at Epiphany in the Bishop Arts District.

We borrowed this darling photo from the blog of Oil and Cotton, where Jan Schmidt teaches basket-making classes, including bike baskets. We didn’t find any of these on the current class calendar, but it’s worth checking for updates.

Lastly, anyone who has a bicycle can take it to church on Sunday morning to have it blessed. Seriously — Church in the Cliff is hosting a “Blessing of the Bicycles” in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi’s Blessing of the Animals. “While somewhat unorthodox to bless bikes rather than pets and other living creatures, I wonder if St. Francis might dig it,” writes pastor Courtney Pinkerton on the church’s blog. “For riding a bicycle can broaden a narrow and constricted view of our immediate environment (which riding in a car allows us to more easily preserve) and connects us to our living world and neighbors. It opens our eyes to our position in a web of all creation, something which St. Francis taught about at length.”

The church meets at 11 a.m. at The Kessler, and this Sunday’s service will be held outside to not only bless bikes, but so that members can partner with Viva Oak Cliff to clean bikes recently collected to share with neighborhood children. Pinkerton emphasizes that being a cyclist is not necessary to attend.

“All are welcome: bikers and non bikers, believers and questioners and questioning believers.”
