This is the summertime blog series in which we review every flavor at the legendary Oak Cliff sno cone stand Aunt Stelle’s. Aunt Stelle’s is open 2-9 p.m. Friday-Sunday. So we’re tasting three flavors a week, banana through zoro.

I was a little disappointed on Friday because I didn’t want banana. I wanted what I always get, pink lady or cherry. But I am dedicated to the mission of the Aunt Stelle’s report, so I ordered a small banana ($2.50).

Banana-flavored stuff usually tastes strangely tangy and artificial. But not this. My sno cone was really, really yellow, and it was delicious. Like a banana made of high-fructose corn syrup.

Saturday’s flavor was beatle. It tastes nothing like beetles or Beatles. It tastes like sweet tarts, and it’s navy blue. My date ordered lime, and he was totally jealous of my beatle sno cone. A beatle sno cone will turn your teeth and tongue dark blue. And you might recognize the food dye again later, ahem, after it’s digested. But it was really good, and it’s no wonder this is one of the most popular flavors at Aunt Stelle’s.

Sunday’s flavor was bubble gum. It’s more of a true blue, so coordinate your beatle- or bubble gum-colored tongue depending on your outfit. After beatle, bubble gum just didn’t do it for me. It’s sweet and blue, but it’s just not as good as its alphabetic predecessor. Next week in the Aunt Stelle’s report: cherry, cinnamon and chocolate.
