Jason Roberts, Domingo Garcia, Carlos Quintanilla and Chrysta CastaƱeda of Oak Cliff, and Steve Salazar of West Dallas have filed to run for U.S. Congress in the newly created District 33. They will compete with six candidates from Tarrant County and one from North Dallas in the Democratic primary May 29.

Two Republicans ā€” Charles King of Cedar Hill and Chuck Bradley of Fort Worth ā€” have filed to run for the seat, which is favored for a Democratic win in the November general election.

Garcia and Salazar, both lawyers, have served as Dallas City Council members. CastaƱeda is a lawyer who was the lead defense attorney for the Episcopal School of Dallas in its recent civil case involving sexual misconduct. Quintanilla is an activist who fought an ordinance targeting Hispanics in Famers Branch. Jason Roberts is mister Oak Cliff, most famous for his Better Block projects.

The new district includes parts of Oak Cliff, Cockrell Hill, Grand Prairie, Fort Worth and Irving, plus a stretch of Dallas east of Interstate 35 to Interstate 635.

I found this analysis of the new district from the Lone Star Project, which provides this description: “It is anchored in the African American and integrated neighborhoods in the City of Fort Worth and then extends east to include part of Arlington and then further east to include part of Grand Prairie, part of Irving and the north Oak Cliff area of Dallas.”

The analysis calls the district “safely Democratic” and suggests a Tarrant County Democrat has the best advantage.
