Seventeen Hundred Seeds, the farming-as-art project on West Davis at Van Buren opened Saturday. Bolsa Mercado provided sunflower-themed snacks and neighbors showed up with kiddos, dogs and picnics.

The project, from Cynthia Mulcahy and Robert Hamilton of Oak Cliff, is intended to bring the community together.

Courtney Rainwater underwrote the project, and she even drove to five Home Depot stores on planting day in March to buy dozens of seed packets. Rick Garza owns the land. Juan Pablo Segura of Familia Auto Sales is providing all the water.
