Dallas ISD students who show up for the first day of school Monday, August 27, will have their names entered into a random drawing to receive one of three $500 incentives awarded by Dallas ISD School Board President Lew Blackburn.
Blackburn says the incentive aims to encourage students to show up for classes on time and ready to learn on the first day of school, according to today’s press release.
“Attendance is critical to a student’s academic success. I want to make sure that each student and [his or her] parent or guardian realizes just how important attendance is starting with the first day of the school year,” says Blackburn, via said statement. “I, also, encourage sponsors, businesses and others to make matching donations to be used to offer incentives to more students.”
The incentive plan will award a $500 debit card to one student from each level—elementary, middle and high school. The winners will be randomly selected electronically through the district’s MIS department.
Wow – $500 for the first day of school? Personally, I think they should narrow it down to kids who attend the first 10 or 20 days of school sans tardiness, but OK. I get where he’s going with this.
