Brumley and his rain barrel

A soft opening for the Brumley Gardens nursery at 700 W. Davis is from 6-8 p.m. today, Sept. 6. Brumley has been a gardener all his life, and he used to sell tomato and pepper plants he grew out of his greenhouse as a kid. Brumley opened his first garden center in Lake Highlands over 20 years ago.

I asked Brumley what brought him to Oak Cliff: “The timing was right, and Oak Cliff folks are my kind of people.” He has renovated the shop to a shabby chic look that has something to offer everyone. I was got a sneak peek this week, and the shop has garden gifts, antiques, art, native Texas plants, pottery, colorful annuals, perennials and much more. Chris is particularly proud of his rain barrel, one of the prettiest rain barrels I’ve seen. They will also offer educational garden classes and workshops. A greenhouse is coming soon to start perennials and house unusual and eclectic varieties of plants

A grand opening Saturday will include a gardening workshop.
