Jump-start magnet school applications

If your kid is thinking of applying to a magnet school, Dallas ISD hosts a magnet fair for interested students and parents Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m.-noon at Skyline High School, on 7777 Forney.

Find information about schools, their specialties and requirements at the fair. Applications will then become available Dec. 3 at all Dallas ISD schools and are due between Jan. 8-31. All the magnet schools will host individual open houses between Dec. 3-14.

If you’re curious about magnet school lingo, it seems that magnet elementary schools are called vanguards, middle schools are called academies and high schools are called magnets.

Admission is competitive, but the fair might give you and your child a head start in figuring out which school is right for them and how to build the strongest application.

You can see a full list of participating magnet schools here. For more information, call 972.925.5914.
