FD Luxe’s list of “The new creative class to watch in 2013,” includes includes 13 people involved in the arts, music and food. Five of them have Oak Cliff connections. It’s not surprising, is it? Our neighborhood is a magnet for young creatives.
Here are our neighbors who made the list:
Artist Nicole Cullum Horn, who with Erik Glissman designed and built the Möbius bench at Commerce and Pittman. Horn also has served on the boards of Art Conspiracy and La Reunion TX. She and her husband, Scott Horn, curate the Magnolia Gallery, inside the Inwood Theater. The takeaway: “Nicole’s obsession is, indeed, helping Dallas connect with its local artists.”
Gallery owner Wanda Dye’s connection to Oak Cliff is in her work with the Better Block. Dye, who teaches at UTA’s School of Architecture, recently opened a contemporary art gallery, RE, in the Cedars, near Lee Harvey’s. The takeaway: “(RE’s) credo is revision, recycling, reclamation, repurposing and renewal.”
Kyle Hobratschk looks like he could be a brunch-eater somewhere in Highland Park, and maybe he is. We don’t know his life. But the artist, a woodworker who also does etchings and paintings, has been part of the Oak Cliff arts scene for a couple of years now, since he took a studio space inside Oil and Cotton. Hobratschk won the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts juried art show this summer with his painting of the Turner House. The takeaway: “…he purchased a reasonably priced former Odd Fellows club building, circa 1898, in downtown Corsicana. Hobratschk is working to restore and renovate the classical three-story brick edifice with help and sweat equity from several artist friends. The vision? A Bauhaus-style artists’ residency, studio and exhibition space, just one hour south of Dallas.”
Omar Flores is the executive chef at Driftwood. He was one of the Dallas Morning News’ best chefs of 2012. The takeaway: “He’s one of the most promising young culinary artists to emerge on the Dallas scene in some time.”
Will Rhoten aka DJ Sober has been rocking parties in the Dallas area for years now. The Oak Cliff resident played Dirk Nowitzki’s wedding this past summer. That is about as cool as you can get in Dallas, Texas. The takeaway: “In addition to the Beauty Bar (on Thursday nights), DJ Sober spins at Dallas Cowboys home games and at shows with his group A.Dd+.”
