Calendar graphicHonestly, I’ve looked at both 2013-2014 DISD calendar alternatives, and I can’t see a whole lot of difference — maybe that’s why I’m not a super-high-paid DISD administrator. Anyway, DISD is soliciting votes through Thursday to determine which of two calendar options the district will use for the 2013-2014 school year.

According to the summary tab, both options have school starting Aug. 26; Option 1 has school ending June 5, with June 6 scheduled as an “inclement weather day” while Option 2 has school ending June 6, with June 9 as the inclement weather day. Both calendars have spring break the week of March 10 and have the Christmas break beginning Dec. 23, with school resuming Jan. 6. Both also have the same number of teaching days, so there’s theoretically no difference in the amount of knowledge that students will be exposed to during the year.

The biggest difference seems to be scheduling teacher in-service days, so maybe teachers should be the ones making this decision. Voting continues through Dec. 20 (Thursday) on DISD’s website. The new calendar usually is ratified by the school board sometime in January.
