green doorThat’s the claim of a recent press release we received. According to a “national color expert” quoted in the release, “You should try to match the color of your entry door with your personality to give guests a ‘preview’ of the owner inside the home.”

Advocate president Rick Wamre sent the release to me with the question, “Don’t you have a red door?” Red, according to the color expert, “tells the world to ‘look at me!’ ” (Good to know how I’m viewed.)

But no, I have an orange door. And while the color is absolutely lovely, it was suggested by my architect and home designer (whose knack for these decisions I trust much more than mine) to complement our house and front deck color. I originally had planned to go with blue, the color that shades much of my home’s interior, but he wisely advised against it.

I’ve noticed that the front doors of homes in Oak Cliff are growing more and more colorful. Are they a reflection of our design sensibilities or our personalities — or both?

Here is what the national color expert believes your door says about you:

Red tells the world to “look at me!” This bright color says I’m not afraid of standing out or saying what’s on my mind.

White says that I prefer things that are organized, neat and clean. Even if my home isn’t always this way, I wish it were!

Green tells the world that you have traditional values and enjoy being a member of the community.

Black says I’m consistent, conservative and reserved in my manner as well as my approach to color. With a black door, I’m saying my design style is timeless rather than trendy.

Blue tells people you are naturally at ease in most situations and people are attracted to your easygoing personality.

Orange says I’m friendly, fun-loving and enjoy getting together with people, a color for an extrovert.

Yellow says you have a personality similar to green, but a bit less traditional. You’re most likely a leader or organizer of a group.

Purple reveals a “free spirited” person who is comfortable taking risks, thinking differently and dreaming big.

So, does your door describe you accurately, or is it time for a paint update?
