Our neighborhood’s choices in Asian fare include a a few buffets, the Thai place in Bishop Arts, a couple of Chinese takeout joints and the pho at Nova. In other words, it is lacking.

But there is something new. Gogi Teriyaki & Taco opened last week on Westmoreland at Illiniois. It is owned by the same family that owns Donuts N Coffee in the same shopping center.

We tried bibimbap with beef and pork ($7.95), which was tasty if a little greasy.

We also tried galbi ($11.95), marinated beef short ribs, basically, Korean tablitas. They tasted sweet and of sesame. Not bad, but again, a little greasy. It comes with rice and stir-fried cabbage, which I liked better than the meat.

Finally, the tacos. They come two to an order and cost $5.95. When you order them, the cook will ask what you want on your taco, from her station in the open kitchen, and you can choose red or green salsa, pico de gallo, lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese and sour cream. We ordered beef and chicken and asked for pico on the tacos and then green salsa and sour cream on the side.

The tacos, we agreed, were the best items we tried. The meat is tender and tasty — probably still a little greasy but it tastes better on a flour tortilla than it does on rice. The pico almost killed me as it was full of jalapeño seeds, so be careful if you try it.

There are a few more things for us to try at the takeout-only Gogi, most notably, the teriyaki. But even more, we’d like to try the spicy beef or chicken soup ($5.95)

This location is a little out of the way for me, a 75208-er. If I got hungry shopping at Marshalls or the better Fiesta, I think I would be more inclined to stop in at El Tizoncito, one of the best taquerías in Dallas, which is right across the street from Gogi. And now there is a ramen shop that is supposed to open soon in Deep Ellum, only about five miles from my house. Gogi doesn’t do a bad job, and I appreciate the effort to add some different flavors to the neighborhood, I’m not sure Gogi will become a regular stop.
