Stanford, who worked at the Dream Café for 15 years, says he looked for a restaurant space on West Davis for over a year.

“Every time something came up, it was gone,” he says.

When the former Café Maya space became available earlier this year, he snapped it up.

“Just being the 12th Mexican food place on the block just wasn’t going to cut it,” he says. “But I thought we were primed for a casual, economic seafood place that is family friendly.”

The Fish’s menu will include fried catfish with sweet potato fries, grilled salmon, tilapia fish tacos, Mexican shrimp cocktail and crab-meat hush puppies. All of the sauces will be made in-house, Stanford also plans a burger made from ground skirt steak, as well as a mac and cheese with gruyere, white cheddar and sharp cheddar. He plans to have an oyster bar when they’re in season.

The menu will be in the $9-per-person range. A grand opening is planned for Aug. 2-3, with complimentary beer and wine.

Stanford has lived in Oak Cliff for eight years, and he grew up in Red Bird.
