The J.D. Tippit memorial marker at Tenth and Patton: David Leeson

Our November cover story draws from Adamson High School alumnus Lon Oakley’s new book, “Two Deaths and an Arrest.” Oakley interviewed more than 100 Adamson alumni and former staff for the book, the sales of which benefit the Adamson Alumni Association.

Adamson will host a memorial the morning of Nov. 22 at the J.D. Tippit marker at Tenth and Patton, with alumni in attendance.

Gary Delaune, the KLIF announcer who was the first to broadcast that the president had been shot, will be there to “relate how he spent the next 72 hours covering the assassination and the later shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby on Sunday morning,” Oakley says.

Oakley will be signing copies of his book, and afterward, they’re planning lunch at El Corazon de Tejas, or as Oakley describes it in an email to alumni,  the “old El Chico’s/Tejano’s.”
