Screen shot 2014-01-14 at 7.16.47 AMThe Sunset High School marching band has come a long way under the leadership of director Rametria Smith, who is interviewed in the January Advocate. When she arrived eight years ago, the band had dwindled to a handful of students.

But the Sunset band has a long history as a marching band. The Texas Archive of the Moving Image has this student film from the 1970s, titled “Big D,” about a sanitation worker who finds a hat that magically turns him into a drum major leading the Bison band. He takes the band through the Sunset Hill neighborhood, Kidd Springs Park, across the Houston Street Viaduct, into downtown and atop the Southland Life building.
