According to police, the officer responded to a complaint of a man trying to break into a car and making lewd comments to women in the 100 block of North Windomere.

The officer was in uniform and driving a squad car, but he was off duty and serving as neighborhood patrol.

The officer saw a man near 12th and Rosemont who resembled the description of the car burglar from the 911 call. He was waiting for backup when the suspect tried to force his way into a passing car. The burglary suspect refused to stop and moved toward the officer in a “manner perceived to be dangerous.” So the officer shot him. No weapon was found on the dead man.

The name of neither the officer nor the victim has been released.
