Several people have asked why there is a DART police car escorting the new streetcar.
DART spokesman Mark Ball answered our questions today:
Why is there a DART police car following the streetcar, and for how long?
The police escort is for the safety of the passengers on board the streetcar as well as traffic management as we help folks get familiar with the idea of a train on the street.
This is not a permanent thing. There is no scheduled date for concluding the escorts as we monitor the behavior of motorists in the area.
How much does it cost, and how is it being funded?
Expenses for DART Police services are included in the streetcar’s established operating budget.
