The Canyon in Oak Cliff is planned to have as many as 7,500 apartments, 1,000 hotel rooms, 1.2 million square feet of office space and 800,000 square feet of shops and restaurants.

Hotel developers Atlantic Hotels Group and Civitas Capital Group staged a ceremonial groundbreaking last week for a four-story, 103-room Marriott Residence Inn at The Canyon. This is the third Marriott Residence Inn within the Dallas city limits, but the first south of the Trinity River. The hotel could be completed by mid-2017.

Developer Stratford Land, which spent about six years buying up parcels for the project, originally staged a ceremonial groundbreaking in summer 2013.

The same year, the developer pulled a shady but legal political maneuver to raise $97 million through the sale of municipal bonds in order to pay for infrastructure including roads, water lines and sewage.
