Two African penguin chicks hatched there recently. They are the second and third African penguins ever to hatch at the zoo. The first, Marina, was born last spring; these chicks are her siblings. They haven’t been named yet because their genders haven’t been determined.

The chicks were hatched Jan. 28 and Feb. 1, and they each weighed about 2.5 ounces.

African penguins are an endangered species. Last year, the zoo sent four penguins to the San Diego Zoo for a new breeding colony there.
