In today’s world, knowing how to speak and write in a second language can only be considered helpful.
Whether it is getting a leg up in job interviews, communicating across cultures, or feeling at home while journeying to another country, knowing a second language — specifically Spanish — offers many benefits.
Here’s five things all parents should know about the district’s two-way dual-language program:
1 – Students in pre-K through first grade are eligible to enroll in the program. The program extends as students advance from grade level to grade level and allows for development in their first and second language.
2 — The program creates bilingual and bicultural students by putting Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students in the same classroom and teaching them the same curriculum in both languages. Over the course of a day in a two-way dual-language classroom, Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students are taught certain subjects (such as science) together in Spanish and other subjects (such as math) in English.
3 — Parents speak very highly of the two-way program. Rhonda Edmundson, a parent of fifth-grade twins who have participated in the Dallas ISD two-way dual-language program since early childhood, says:
Having our girls involved in the two-way dual-language program was a no-brainer. We live in a global society, and language is really the key to unlocking business opportunities.
4 — The benefits go beyond acquiring language skills. Parents say the importance of exposing their child to different cultures is equally important. Gabriella Hansen, who has a daughter in Dallas ISD’s two-way dual-language program, says: “Being in the two-way dual-language program means that my daughter will have a more open perspective of the world and people she will encounter.”
A two-way dual-language informational fair is set for Saturday, April 9, at 9 a.m. at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview High School, 1201 E 8th St.
The districtwide enrollment period for two-way dual-language programs runs through April 30.
