The only Dallas mayor to live in Oak Cliff during their term also was our “centennial mayor,” convincing state officials that the 1936 Texas Centennial should be celebrated in Dallas as part of the State Fair of Texas.
As part of the months-long celebration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Dallas in June 1936, and it’s been said that the Roosevelts enjoyed lemonade on Mayor George Sergeant’s front porch on Zang.
Sergeant was an interesting guy, who lived on Zang until his death in 1971. Read more about him and his eventful two-year term as Dallas mayor here.
