The Dallas Police Department charged a 22-year-old man in the shooting death of a store clerk during the attempted robbery of Sunshine Food Mart on Cockrell Hill Road in September.

Police say Lonzell Hunter is one of two men who entered the store around 4:30 a.m. Sept. 23, brandishing an assault rifle. Mowaffaw Shararah, 50, was shot once in the chest, and he died on the scene.

The two men also are suspected in the robbery of a 7-Eleven store in West Dallas earlier that morning.

An arrest warrant affidavit states Hunter and another suspect were caught on surveillance video buying a semiautomatic rifle at a Mesquite gun store the previous day.

Several witnesses identified Hunter as the shooter, and one witness told police Hunter had admitted to the shooting. Police also used cellphone records to show Hunter was in the area at the time of he crime.

Hunter was arrested Nov. 2 and charged with an unrelated capital murder. He is in jail on two capital murder charges with bond set at $500,000.

If convicted of either crime, he could face the death penalty or life in prison.
