The Healthy Schools Campaign sponsors the competition, which requires the teams to come up with meals that cost about $1 each and meet strict nutritional standards.

“One in three American teens is overweight or obese, and many students eat up to half of their daily calories at school,” according to a media release. “By challenging student chefs to create healthy and delicious school meals, Cooking up Change puts student voices front and center in the national conversation about school food.”

The winning creation will be served in lunchrooms across the district, and the winning team gets to travel to Washington, D.C. for the national finals.

Molina’s culinary program started two years ago, and it serves lunch to the public twice a week.
