Vegetarian, chicken and pastor tacos from Puesto

A new taquería opened in the old Cool & Hot space, the former gas station on East Eighth at the Interstate 35 service road, last year.

El Puesto opened quietly on Halloween, and it’s been hush-hush ever since. The owner is Luis Olvera, who also owns the low-key Trompo in West Dallas.

“I don’t want anyone to compare my children,” Olvera says of the two restaurants. “I don’t have favorites.”

The new place has been painted over in white, and there’s no sign.

But the tacos are legit. The veggie taco has squash, roasted poblano and grilled onions on a thin layer of refried beans. We also tried the chicken and pastor tacos, and we’ll be back for more.

The tacos cost $1.85 each, and the menu is simple. Breakfast tacos are available from 7 a.m.-11 a.m. every day.
