The Dallas City Council is expected to approve accepting $8 million from the State of Texas for the extension in its meeting today.

The streetcar now runs from near Union Station to Bishop Arts. This extension would take the streetcar from the Houston Street Viaduct east to Young Street and the hotel. The city carries hundreds of millions of dollars in debt for the publicly funded Downtown Omni.

The streetcar extension could open in the summer of 2019, and the line is expected to meet the McKinney Avenue Trolley by 2023. The streetcar currently is free to ride, but DART, which runs the streetcar, is conducting a fare study in expectation that the free rides will end eventually.
