stamps buildingIn 1927, V.O. Stamps and J.R. Baxter moved the headquarters of their successful music publishing company to Tyler Street in Oak Cliff.

The Stamps-Baxter Music and Printing Co., which produced inexpensive sheet music and operated a music school, gained popularity and success by promoting the Stamps Quartet on KRLD radio. Stamps at one time was one of the largest publishers of gospel music in the world, and it was a fixture on Tyler Street for over 30 years.

The building, which has retail and office space on the ground floor and three apartments on the second floor, is on the market for $650,000. The building is huge — almost 10,000 square feet — but needs major renovations.

Another historical building a block away on Tyler Street also is on the market.

The 1932 Dallas Power and Light building won an achievement award from Preservation Dallas last year. Oak Cliff-based lawyer John McCall bought and began renovating the building in 2007.

The three-story building comprises about 8,100 square feet and has office space on the first two floors and one enormous loft apartment with amazing skyline views up top. It’s listed at $1.6 million.
