Dallas City Council approved millions of dollars for Oak Cliff improvements today.
Council approved a public art tribute to Stevie Ray and Jimmy Vaughan at Kiest Park. Neighbors, led by former “Buddy” magazine editor Kirby Warnock, raised $68,000 for the sculpture — $28,000 of that goes toward the sculpture itself and $40,000 goes to future maintenance. The city pitched in $47,200 for the sculpture. Sculptor Casto Solano is expected to begin constructing the piece soon.
Also approved was $3 million for reconstruction and drainage improvements on Sylvan Avenue between Fort Worth Avenue and Singleton. Work is expected to begin soon on that project, which will take about 15 months. When it’s finished, the street will have four lanes with bike lanes on both sides.
Erosion control measures approved at Martin Weiss Park, including shoring up a pavilion and pedestrian bridge, will cost about $14,000.
Finally, a new stoplight is coming to Colorado and Marsalis. A Texas Department of Transportation grant is funding that.
