A nationwide recall has been issued for a lemonade product after it was found to contain an undeclared food additive linked to health risks.
Oak Cliff Beverage Works (OCBW) has voluntarily recalled over 16,000 units of its Beverage Base Lemonade due to the presence of Yellow 5, a synthetic dye that was not disclosed on the ingredient list.
On February 25, the recall on the Beverage Base Lemonade was classified as a Class II recall. This classification means the recall is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the FDA.
According to the FDA’s recent enforcement report, the recalled products include:
- Beverage Base Lemonade, 3 gallon, BIB: Best By 12/12/2025
- Beverage Base Lemonade, 5 gallon, BIB: Best By 01/12/2026
- Beverage Base Sweet&Sour, 3 gallon, BIB: Best By 12/10/2025
A beverage base, in this case, is considered a drink product that may be mixed with water to create a “finished beverage,” according to the FDA’s compliance policy guide. This is how fountain drinks are produced typically, with soda fountains combining flavored syrup, carbon dioxide and water to create the final product.
The beverage bases were distributed to eight different states – Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas and California. A combined total of 8,847 units were recalled.
